About Madeleine

My passion for making art has never ceased. Since early childhood I have been surrounded by art and music and like all children loved to express myself.... this natural urge has continued through the decades to be an essential part of my existence.

The themes change, the medium varies but I follow my strong intuition in whatever I choose to create. Much of my work is somewhat personal and autobiographical but the subject matter is universally recognisable.

No matter the subject, creating the work is an internal process, a response to my experiences of life or my current mood. My inner world. Occasionally working from observation, but mainly from imagination and  memory, each piece develops simultaneously with others in a series. One influences another. I strive for balance of composition, and placement of form with particular attention to nuances of colour. The works are contemplative ....... I realize that subconsciously I pursue a sense of stillness and harmony.

Deeply inspired by masters of the past, many years of overseas travel and countless hours spent exploring in the great art museums of Europe and elsewhere, I have grown a strong rapport and affection for certain individual artists and periods. The early Italian Renaissance, Flemish Masters and Spanish Baroque and much later, the late 19th to early 20th century  “Intimists” have always engaged me in a fundamental way, as has Metaphysical painting. There is a purity, and simplicity implicit in such art that I find so appealing. So much expressed with the simplest of means and often with an underlying, mysterious symbolism.

I delight in discovering something extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary. I’m impassioned by the beauty to be found in the simplest of everyday things.

My paintings are a celebration of life.
